1. What’s your government name? And how old are you? Give the people a little background about you, who you are, where you from etc…
My government name is Matthew Haines, I’m 20 years old. Im currently a collegiate lacrosse player at Gettysburg College, my father died when I was 19, I was born in Philadelphia but raised in Marlboro, New Jersey. That’s about all the important parts.
2. What is the meaning behind your rap name?/Where did it come from and why did you choose it?
There’s nothing really special about my rap name, I just switched the two first letters of my first and last name from Matty Haines to Hatty Maines and shortened it to just Maines, it was actually my friend Kristen’s idea. Before that I had chosen the name Monologic (one logic/monologue of logic/etc) but decided that name seemed like I was trying too hard.
3. How long you been in the game for?
I started rapping when I was about 15 or 16 but I sucked, so I stopped for a while and eventually picked it back up a little before I turned 19 so I guess I’ve been “officially” in the game for about a year.
4. How did you get into the game?
I’ve always liked writing and performing so it just made sense. I like the culture of hip hop and I think the ability to express thought through rhyme the way some rap artists do is so impressive. It’s got a level of expression that other genres don’t compare with, but that’s just my opinion.
5. So why do you rap? Is it like a hobby or a career move?
I rap because I like making words rhyme, I think it’s fun and sometimes it helps me express myself better, I’ve always had trouble telling people about what’s going on so it’s a way to get my thoughts out there. It’s a hobby, I would love for it to be my career, I’m going to drop a mixtape probably the summer of 2013 and hopefully that could lead to something, but basically unless a record contract falls into my lap, rapping will just be a hobby.
6. Who inspires you/Who is your favorite rapper?
My dad always inspired me with his cold skepticism, and my mom is so supportive of everything I do I can’t believe it. Other than that, Beethoven, Edgar Allan Poe, and Albert Camus probably above everybody else, I’ve always been drawn to the tortured genius character, even though I guess it’s a little cliche. My favorite rapper right now is probably Childish Gambino, his word play is unparalleled in the mainstream. I think the Palmer Squares from Chicago are also some of the greatest multisyllabic rhymers I have ever heard.
7. What are you trying to bring to the game?
I wouldn’t say I’m trying to bring anything to the game. I guess I’d say I’m just trying to put the spotlight on lyrical content and less on catchy hooks, I hate writing hooks because I suck at it and I don’t get what the point is. I love complex rhyme schemes and cryptic lines that take some thought to decipher like you find with a lot of the guys in the Rhymesayers group (Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Grieves, etc).
8. What’s your favorite song or project you ever came out with?
Probably the team backpack 2013 audition video I put out, I actually heard back from them and have a chance to be in the next round which is pretty cool since not a lot of guys get that opportunity. I also love my Backseat Freestyle by Kendrick Lamar cover, I think it has some of my best lyricism.
9. You got any projects coming out in the near future? If so, what are they?
Just the mixtape, which I guess will be coming out sometime this summer. Haven’t even decided on a name for it yet so don’t ask me.
And finally where can the people find you at, online?
